Dual Diagnosis Treatment

We firmly believe that our integrated approach to treatment achieves the best recovery outcome for our clients. By 'integrated' we mean the simultaneous treatment of both a mental health condition/s and a substance use disorder.  Also called Dual Diagnosis treatment, our Stepping Stones programme removes the need to undertake separate treatment programmes for each condition. We treat the complexity of multiple disorders in a single programme, at one location, which also includes detox in our dedicated and licensed detox unit.

Dual diagnosis treatment is what sets Stepping Stones apart. A rehab can only legally and ethically provide dual diagnosis treatment when they are licensed to do so. At Stepping Stones our programmes and individual therapy are managed by our team of psychiatric specialists (Consultants), General Practitioners, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and psychiatrically trained Professional Nurses, all of whom are registered, every year, with the HPCSA, SACSSP or SANC.
The Stepping Stones model, uses a blend of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) with the principles of the Minnesota 12 Step Model which practices the philosophy of abstinence.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) provides clients with new skills to manage painful and difficult emotions and to decrease conflict in their relationships. DBT focuses on providing therapeutic tools in four important areas. Firstly, mindfulness focuses on improving the client’s ability to accept and be present in the moment. Secondly, distress tolerance, which is aimed at helping the client to tolerate negative and uncomfortable emotions instead of trying to escape the feelings. Thirdly, DBT concentrates on ways to achieve emotional regulation when problems challenge the client. Lastly, the client learns how to strengthen relationships using tools and techniques to communicate with others in ways that are empowering and assertive whilst achieving self-respect.
